Vicarious Trauma: The Cost of Caring
Dr. Matthew Paldy, PhD, LP — NYC Trauma Therapist
In a city as demanding as New York, professionals in healthcare, law, and social services often carry a weight that isn't their own. Vicarious trauma—also known as secondary traumatic stress—is the emotional residue that comes from witnessing the pain and suffering of others. Children who grow up in traumatic environments often experience this type of trauma.
Signs the "Helper" Needs Help
Because you are trained to prioritize others, you may dismiss your own symptoms as "just part of the job." However, vicarious trauma can manifest as:
- Emotional Exhaustion: Feeling "leveled" or unable to empathize, even with loved ones.
- Worldview Shifts: A growing sense of cynicism, hopelessness, or feeling that the world is inherently unsafe.
- Intrusive Thoughts: Sometimes a particular thought will constantly recoccur. The thought may be disturbing and anxiety inducing.
Restoring Your Professional and Personal Self
My approach goes beyond "self-care" clichés. We work to understand the specific psychological intersections between your history and your current life. By creating a safe relational home for your experiences, we can process the "absorbed" trauma, allowing you to increase your stability and gain vitality. If symptoms have become entrenched, they may resemble depression or burnout and benefit from similar depth-oriented work.
