A Quick Exercise for the Self: Finding Your Own Truth

Find a time when you can be alone. Place yourself near a mirror and look yourself in the eyes. Complete both of the following phrases:

"I pretend that ______"

"The truth is _______"

Keep repeating the phrases and filling in the blanks as you face yourself. For example: "I pretend that I have a close relationship with my sister." And: "The truth is, I don't share most of my feelings with her."

You can also do this exercise with your partner. There are often surprising truths that emerge, which can become the basis for building a stronger relationship.

This kind of honest self-examination is a cornerstone of personal growth therapy. If the exercise reveals deeper patterns or sources of distress, psychotherapy in NYC can help you explore them further.
