Finding a NY Therapist Who's a Fit for You: Essential Questions
By Dr. Matthew Paldy
Finding a therapist can be intimidating and confusing. The relationship you have with your therapist is a critical one, often referred to as the "therapeutic alliance." It is usually worth speaking with a few clinicians to get a sense of who feels like a good fit before committing to ongoing work.
You should ask yourself what you think would be best for you. Some people benefit from a more structured or directive approach, while others prefer a more exploratory style. At times, what we feel most comfortable with is not necessarily what is most helpful for change.
Don't be afraid to ask questions such as:
• What is your education and training?
• What is your view on how long therapy should last?
• What is your working style like? Do you mostly listen or are you participatory?
• Do you have a particular worldview? How might that affect our work together?
• What is your philosophy on how growth and change occur in
therapy?
• What theoretical influences do you draw from?
These are starting points. Finding a therapist in NYC can feel daunting. A good therapist should be able to engage these questions directly and take your concerns seriously.
